Installed this on my 1987 325is at about 120k. The original unit looked to be running fine and had a substantial amount of tension, resulting in a decent amount of air movement. However the engine temperature always seemed to run a bit hotter that it should (needle would move to 3/4). After installing this unit the engine temp runs normal all time now. This assembly is designed to increase rpm to the fan by utilizing energy produced by the engine. This unit is filled with a thick viscous oil which expands and contracts along with the engine temperature. However over time the fluid breaks down and gives the sense that the unit is working properly but is not. If your engine seems to be running a little hot most likely this unit has begin to fail. Take the few extra moments to install a new one, it will keep you from replacing the entire motor. Love this price and the quality of this product.
